Antique Cabinet Makeover

I was going to save this post for the morning but I'm too excited to share it with you all!

Several weeks ago on a rainy Saturday morning I called up my dad to see if he would come over to help me pick up an old door from a garage sale down the street.  It wasn't far from my house, on a quiet little street.  The door had been the original from when the house was built.  We got to talking to the owner and I mentioned that I had a booth at a vintage store and that I was interested in refurbishing pieces to sell.  The homeowner then said, well how about this piece?  It was a little cabinet, about waist high.  To be honest, I didn't think much of it, but she said she would give it to me for a great price.  Why not!  So we loaded the door and cabinet into the truck and went back home.

Originally, my plan  was to re-stain the piece and maybe give it a new top.  But after trying to remove the small areas of paint, I realized that the wood wasn't good enough to stain.  I decided to give to paint it and add a little more detail to it.  I picked up these little wood pieces from Hobby Lobby  and attached them to the drawer.  I sanded and sanded it and filled in holes and added new hinges.

After several coats of paint (Heirloom Traditions DIY Paint in Vintage Linen) it was finally done!  I painted the inside a fresh coat of white paint and added some delicate new knobs and handle.  What started out being a piece that I thought I would quickly fix up and get rid of, it became a piece that I really wanted to get right.

I am really excited with how this piece turned out.  It was exactly as I pictured it in my head.  It looks fresh and clean, but not totally new.  I wanted to keep the character and charm of the older piece.  It may not have a silky smooth finish, but it shows some dents from years of being used and loved.

Tomorrow I will bring this piece to my booth and put it up for sale.  I truly hope that someone will see what I see and want to take it home to cherish it as it should be.

So, how did I do?  Do you love it as much as I do?  I am going to have a hard time parting with it, but it's ready for someone to take it home!

  1. What a lovely transformation! I passed up one almost identical to this a few weeks ago because the doors were all wonky...I just wish the price had been better. Love the fresh new look. Thanks so much for sharing at Vintage Inspiration Party.

    1. Thank you so much. I almost passed this one up too! I only paid $15 for it! Once it was all finished I shared the new look with the previous owner and I'm happy to say she loved it! It was owned by her family for years, so I'm glad she approved of the new look. Thanks for checking it out Betsy!
